Googles ranking algorithm is partly to do with the number of quality, and the variety of inbound links to a website, and is, apparently, looking more into the quality of these links, but its still basically the same answer, yes, linking is important.
There was a time initially, where websites were offering all sorts of irrelevant links just for the sake of it, these are frowned upon and rightly so, the idea behind linking is to link to a website that is relevant to your site, and your visitors, if not, what is the point.

Quality links are important, you will see a lot of companies promising hundreds or thousands of quality inbound links for your website, do not even consider this.
There are link exchange companies, software programs, article writing systems, blog systems, or splog, and the buying of links.
The buying of links can be acceptable if the link is of good quality and relevant to your site, but dont over do it.
Example: Your website sells fridges and you link to another site that just sells freezers, brilliant.
Bad example: Your website sells fridges and you link to a site that sells car tyres.

Link buying is a very simple idea, website owners need high quality, high PR (pagerank) inbound links. Websites that are of high quality are looking to make money from their websites.
High ranking websites often create a page where you can pay a fee for a simple text link in the hope this may increase your page rank, make sure the page your link is on has a good page rank and also that its relevant to your website.

Google has stated several times that buying links is not an acceptable practice and that doing so can get you in trouble.
Google, apparently, has recently become quite good at identifying purchased links, so, think on! |
